Roosevelt Elementary

Bike Safety Art

We know that many of you enjoyed the colorful bike safety art near Roosevelt Elementary, designed by our talented students – Pedro Deleon Ramos and Mackenzie Beskow. Their artwork was created as part of the 2024 FDOT Bike Safety Symbol Design contest. As part of winning the content, FDOT installed the winning designs to the sidewalk. With the intention to bring attention to safe riding with the bonus of adding a splash of Cocoa Beach creativity to our sidewalks.

Unfortunately, you may have noticed the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) is now removing this artwork. This change to comply with mandated federal safety guidelines outlined in the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) and the 2023 Greenbook (Manual of Uniform Standards of Design, Construction, and Maintenance of Streets and Highways). These rules apply to all public roads and sidewalks, even those maintained by the City, to ensure that markings are consistent and recognizable everywhere.

To recognize the students’ contributions, FDOT has offered Roosevelt Elementary the opportunity to display the winning designs as posters or signage on campus.

We understand the community’s disappointment and remain committed to supporting programs that highlight local creativity and promote safety for all.
