Storm Prep Sunday

From Tropical Storm Erin to Major Hurricane Preparedness

Right now, Tropical Storm Erin is expected to reach Category 3 or 4 strength, but the path currently has it turning away from the US (but don’t let your guard down anything could change),  but this is the perfect opportunity to practice for major hurricanes.

A Category 3 or 4 hurricane means:

  • Category 3 (111–129 mph winds) → Devastating damage. Many trees snapped, power poles down, water and power outages lasting days to weeks. Coastal flooding likely.
  • Category 4 (130–156 mph winds) → Catastrophic damage. Most trees snapped or uprooted, power lines down, and some areas uninhabitable for weeks or months. Extreme storm surge and inland flooding possible.

Here’s what you need to know & do:
* Secure your home – Reinforce windows & doors, bring in outdoor items.
* Stock up early – Water, non-perishable food, medications, batteries, and fuel.
* Plan for power loss – Have backup power or alternate cooling options.
* Evacuation readiness – Know your zone & have a “go bag” ready.
* Protect important documents – Store in waterproof containers or digitally.

Why practice now?
Erin may only bring tropical storm conditions, gusty winds, rain, and possible coastal flooding, but using this time to run through your major hurricane prep checklist ensures you’re ready if a stronger storm comes later this season.

Think of Erin as the “fire drill” before the real emergency. Your actions now can make the difference later.

Stay informed. Stay prepared. Stay safe.
