Hey neighbor,
Here's your quick update for what's happening in Cocoa Beach, from the first day of school and some important things happening around town.
Welcome Back to School
Welcome back to school, Cocoa Beach! Whether you’re dropping off at the bus stop, biking to class, or walking into the first day, here’s to a safe, exciting, and successful school year.
A big welcome back to our amazing students and the dedicated teachers, staff, and school teams who make it all happen.
Let’s look out for our students, slow down in school zones, and make this year a great one!
And neighbor, don't forget, the Back to School tax holiday goes on through the end of the month.
Fire Department
No worries, there's no fire here. The Fire Department will be doing their annual hose testing Wednesday, August 13 and maybe part of Thursday, August 14 behind Fire Station 1. The area right behind the station on Brevard Ave will be blocked off for safety.
Keeping Yourself Protected
Last week, the Florida Department of Health (FDOH) confirmed four cases of locally- acquired Dengue fever. Dengue is a viral illness spread through the bite of an infected mosquito.
Symptoms usually appear within 1 to 5 days after infection and can include muscle ache, joint pain, fever, and possibly a skin rash. Dengue is not contagious and does not typically cause respiratory symptoms.
To protect yourself, your family, and neighbors, remember the Four Ps for mosquito safety:
- Prevent - Wear long sleeves and pants when you are outside near mosquitoes; stay inside at dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active
- Protect - Use Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) approved mosquito repellants including those with DEET or Picaridin
- Patch - Ensure window and door screens are patched, and use air conditioning when possible
- Pour - Pour any water out of containers as standing water is a common breeding ground for mosquito larvae
FDOH has provided additional information to protect yourself, find the flyer on the FDOH page.
Be in the know..
